About the game

What is Watermelon Merge?

Watermelon Merge is a free fruit-merging game for the browser: you drop fruit into a bowl one at a time, and whenever two identical fruits touch, they merge into the next, bigger fruit. The goal is to keep merging all the way up to the watermelon — without letting the bowl overflow.

GameDistribution’s description sets the scene: “Start your journey with small and juicy fruits, combine them to create larger and more unique varieties. Your goal is to reach the magnificent watermelon that will be the culmination of your fruit adventure.” Its rules are short: touch where you want to throw the fruit, combine two of the same fruit to get a new one, and “for each merger you get points, the larger the fruit, the more points.”

The whole chain is on screen. An arrow at the bottom of the screen shows every fruit in order, eleven in all, from a little strawberry at the start to a grinning watermelon at the end. Every fruit has a cartoon face.

The playing field is a tall bowl that is wider at the top than at the bottom. The next fruit to drop hangs above it with a thin aiming line running straight down, a NEXT bubble in the top-right corner shows the fruit after that, and the score sits at the top of the screen. In our first minute, a dozen drops and a few merges took the score from 0 to 30, and the bowl already held two orange fruits from further up the chain.

In our test the game opened straight onto the bowl, with no title screen to click through. A gear in the top-right corner opens Settings, with sound and music switches, a Menu button and a Restart button. GameDistribution’s rules end with the one way to lose: “If the fruit falls out of the playing field, the player loses.”

It keeps your best. Settings › Menu opens a home screen with the fruit floating in bubbles, a PLAY GAME button and your record under a crown — ours read “30 YOUR RECORD”, carried over from an earlier session after the page had been reloaded. That makes Watermelon Merge a game of beating your own number, one bowl at a time.

Each drop is a small decision. In our games the fruit to drop was always one of the small ones from the start of the chain, so the big fruit only appeared through merging. That is what makes the game more than luck: where you drop a small fruit now decides whether two medium fruits meet later, and whether those two make something bigger again.

Watermelon Merge is one of many games inspired by Suika Game. GameDistribution lists this one under AppyApp, published on April 22, 2024, and offers it in twelve languages: Chinese (Simplified), English, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Its GameDistribution tags include 2048 — the number-merging game that works on the same idea of pairing equal pieces.

Tips & strategy

How to win at Watermelon Merge

  • Keep the big fruit on one side. Pile the larger fruit in one corner of the bowl and drop the small ones on the other side. Big fruit in the middle split the bowl and leave small fruit stranded.

  • Use NEXT. Watermelon Merge shows the fruit after this one. If the next fruit matches something already in the bowl, drop the current fruit somewhere it will not get in the way.

  • Drop next to a twin. A merge only happens when two identical fruits touch. Aim the line so the new fruit lands right beside its twin, not on top of a different fruit.

  • Chain merges. A merge creates a bigger fruit, and that fruit can merge again if its own twin is next to it. Lining up fruit of rising size gives one drop the chance to set off several merges.

  • Mind the slanted walls. The bowl is wider at the top than at the bottom, so its walls slope inward. Allow for them when you aim near the edges.

  • Leave room at the top. The game ends when fruit leaves the playing field. As the pile grows, drop small fruit where they can still fall low rather than on top of the stack.

  • Chase your record. Watermelon Merge saves your best score in the browser and shows it on the menu. Every game is a chance to beat one number — yours.

  • Do not rush. There is no timer on a drop. Take a moment before each one — a single fruit in the wrong place can block a whole corner.

Good to know — Watermelon Merge prints its whole goal at the bottom of the screen: eleven smiling fruits in a row, from a strawberry at the start to the watermelon at the end of the arrow.
