False 9 — Daily Football Odd-One-Out Puzzle
How False 9 works
False 9 is a daily puzzle: twelve footballers, only a few truly fit the category — tap everyone who doesn't. It's the mirror of Football Impostor — there you find the one odd player; here you clear the whole false group.
Categories come from a curated pool of 100 predicates over a 773-player database (91 playable here) — the same predicate library behind Football Impostor and Futbol Bingo. Each board shows 12 players: three real matches and 9 false.

How to play in 3 steps
- 1
Read the category
Twelve footballers are shown; only a few truly fit the stated category.
- 2
Tap the false ones
Tap everyone who does NOT fit. Tapping a real match costs a life.
- 3
Clear them all
Find all 9 false players before your three lives run out.
How to clear False 9 without losing a life
- 1. Only tap certainties. You start with three lives. Tap players you are sure do NOT fit the category and nobody else — every wrong tap on a real match costs a life.
- 2. Leave the doubtful three for last. Once you have cleared the false players you are confident about, the remaining faces are far more likely to be the three real matches.
- 3. Reputation won't save you. The board is fame-balanced, so a household name is just as likely to be false as a deep cut.
- 4. Read the category type. A nationality category is settled on passports; a club category on transfer history; a stats category on numbers. Match your reasoning to the type.
- 5. Watch the era on club categories. “Played for AC Milan” spans generations — a player can fit even if they never overlapped with anyone else on the board.
The seven category types
Every False 9 board is built on one of seven category types — the same library shared with Football Impostor and Futbol Bingo.
| Type | In pool | Example categories |
|---|---|---|
| Nationality | 32 | Argentine, Brazilian, French, Japanese, Senegalese |
| Club | 26 | Played for Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Juventus, PSG |
| Position | 4 | Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder, Forward |
| League | 6 | Played in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 |
| Age bracket | 6 | Under 21, Under 25, 30 or older, 36+ |
| Career stats | 12 | 100+ goals, 400+ appearances, 6+ career clubs |
| Combination | 14 | French forward, Brazilian midfielder, Spanish defender |
A worked example
Suppose the category is “Played in Ligue 1” and the twelve players include Franck Ribéry, Yaya Touré, Rafael Márquez, Pep Guardiola, Gordon Banks, Pavel Nedvěd and others. Only three truly fit — Ribéry (Marseille), Touré and Márquez (both Monaco). Everyone else is false: Banks, an English goalkeeper, never played in France; Nedvěd was Lazio and Juventus; Guardiola spent his career in Spain, Italy and Qatar. Tap the nine false names — but tap carefully, because the three real ones are mixed in with no fame advantage to give them away.
About the authors
False 9 is maintained by the PlayFutbol Data Team. Each category is a verified predicate over our player database — shared with Football Impostor and Futbol Bingo — so “matches” and “false” are computed, not guessed.

Frequently asked questions
What is False 9?
False 9 is a daily football game (not the tactical position): twelve footballers are shown, only a few truly fit the stated category, and you tap everyone who does not.
How is it different from Football Impostor?
Football Impostor asks you to find the one odd player; False 9 asks you to find the whole group that does not fit — usually nine of the twelve.
How many do I need to find?
Of the 12 players, only three truly match the category, so you must tap the other 9.
What happens if I tap a real match?
You lose one of your three lives. Three wrong taps ends the round.
How many categories are there?
100 curated predicates over a 773-player database, of which 91 are playable here — the same library that powers Football Impostor and Futbol Bingo.
Is everyone shown the same board each day?
Yes — a seeded generator gives every player the same category and twelve footballers on a given date.
What types of categories appear?
Seven: nationality, club, position, league, age bracket, career stats, and combinations such as “Spanish defender”. The daily category is drawn at random from the playable pool.
What is the best strategy for False 9?
Lives are precious, so only tap players you are certain do NOT fit. Leave the three you are unsure about until last — guessing wrong on a real match costs a life.
Why are some of the false players famous?
The board is fame-balanced. The false players are chosen with a similar career profile to the three real matches, so you cannot tell them apart by reputation alone.
Is “False 9” the same as the tactical position?
No — here it is the name of the game (the false players you must clear out). It has nothing to do with the false-nine striker role.
How does False 9 compare to Football Bingo?
Both draw on the same category library. Bingo asks you to find a player who fits each task; False 9 flips it — you find everyone who does not fit a single category.
Can I play False 9 on mobile?
Yes. It is a responsive web game that works on phones, tablets, and desktops with no download.
Is there an archive?
Yes, past daily rounds are replayable and don’t affect your streak.
Is False 9 free?
Yes. No signup, no paywall, no ads inside the game flow.
