How Double Up works

One season. One club that won two or more trophies in it. Naming the club is the easy half — every option in front of you won something around that time. The second half, naming which trophies, is where doubles separate from trebles and where most rounds are actually lost.

Data footprint

73 double-winning seasons, of which 6 are trebles, achieved by 22 clubs between 1930 and 2025, drawn from 800 recorded titles.

That is not a sample — it is every double-winning season inside the competitions we cover. The bounds matter, so here they are in full: Bundesliga, Copa del Rey, Coppa Italia, DFB-Pokal, FA Cup, La Liga, Ligue 1, Premier League, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League. Domestic league cups, super cups and the Club World Cup are not tracked, which is why a club you remember as a treble winner can appear here as a double.

How to play in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Read the season

One club won two or more tracked competitions that year.

  2. 2

    Name the club

4 options, 2 guesses. All of them won something nearby.

  3. 3

    Name the trophies

Pick what they actually won. Every competition is on the board.

How to score better

  1. 1. The league is almost always one of them. A double built on two cups exists but is rare — start from the league of the club's own country.
  2. 2. Match the club to the country before anything else. The domestic cup on offer has to be the one that club is eligible for, which usually eliminates half the board in one move.
  3. 3. European nights are the tiebreak. A Champions League leg turns a double into a treble, and those seasons are the famous ones — if the club is famous for that year, add it.
  4. 4. Guess the club with the era, not the trophy. All four options won something within six seasons, so fame is no filter; the club that was dominant that year is.
  5. 5. A wrong trophy costs you a round, not the club points. Once the club is named those 50 points are banked, so guess the marginal competition rather than stopping.

A worked example

2009-10 offers Internazionale against three clubs that also won something in that window. Naming Inter is the reflex; naming what they won is the round. It reads as a treble in every history of the season, and here it is a treble too — Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League are all tracked. The seasons that catch people out are the opposite shape: a domestic double plus a League Cup, which the record books call a treble and this board calls a double, because the League Cup is outside the eleven competitions listed above.

About the authors

Double Up is maintained by the PlayFutbol Data Team. Doubles are derived, not typed in: every season winner comes from Wikidata, is matched onto our own club list by name, and any season with more than one recorded winner is dropped rather than guessed at. If a club appears twice in one season, it is because the data says so.

Frequently asked questions

What is Double Up?

A daily football game. You are given one season in which a single club won two or more of our 11 tracked competitions. Name the club from 4 options, then name the trophies.

How is it scored?

Naming the club first time is 50 points, second time 25. The trophies are worth another 50 between them, so a treble is not worth more than a double for being longer — it is just harder to complete.

How many guesses do I get?

2 for the club. Once you have named it, you can be wrong about the trophies as many times as there were trophies to find before the round ends.

Which competitions count?

11: Bundesliga, Copa del Rey, Coppa Italia, DFB-Pokal, FA Cup, La Liga, Ligue 1, Premier League, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League.

Why is a real treble showing as a double?

Because league cups, super cups and the Club World Cup are not tracked here. A club that won a league, a domestic cup and a league cup appears as a double. The set is bounded, and this page names the bounds rather than quietly counting differently from the record books.

How many rounds are there in total?

73 — and that is not a sample, it is every double-winning season inside the competitions we cover, from 1930 to 2025. 6 of them are trebles.

Is a shorter rotation not a problem for a daily game?

It is a real trade-off and the honest answer is that the daily habit is worth more than a longer pool. Deep Cut runs on 26 categories and nobody finds that short.

How many clubs appear?

22. Doing the double is rare enough that the same handful of names recur — which is itself a hint worth using.

Where do the wrong club options come from?

Clubs that won something within six seasons of the answer. A club that has never won anything is not a candidate anyone would seriously consider, so it is not offered.

Does everyone get the same season?

Yes. A seeded generator gives every player worldwide the same round for a given date.

Is there an archive?

Yes, the last 30 days are replayable and do not affect your daily streak.

Is it free?

Yes. No signup, no paywall, no ads inside the game.
