Football Contexto — Guess the Secret Player by Closeness Rank · 773 Players
What is Football Contexto?
Football Contexto is a daily football version of Contexto: guess the secret player, and every guess comes back ranked by closeness. The answer is rank #1. Each player you try shows where they land in the ranking — the lower the number, the warmer you are. There is no guess limit; you keep going until you find the player.
Every guess is ranked from #1 to #773 against a database of 773 footballers, using six weighted signals from real career data. A new secret player is chosen every day, the same for everyone.

How to play in 3 steps
- 1
Guess any footballer
Submit any player to get your first closeness rank. The lower the number, the warmer you are.
- 2
Read the rank and the reason
Each guess shows a rank, a heat colour, and a “why this rank” label — shared a club, same nationality and era, same position, and so on.
- 3
Get warmer toward #1
Triangulate from your warmest guesses. Unlimited guesses — reach #1 to win, or tap Hint when stuck.
How the closeness rank is calculated
Unlike the original Contexto, which uses word embeddings, Football Contexto ranks players with a transparent weighted distance over six career signals. Every one of the 773 players is scored against the secret player, then sorted — the answer is #1.
| Signal | Weight | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Shared clubs | 35% | Any club both players appear at — the strongest warm signal |
| Era overlap | 15% | Overlapping active years (teammate-level closeness) |
| Position | 15% | GK / DEF / MID / FWD proximity |
| Nationality | 15% | Same country beats same confederation beats far away |
| Age | 10% | Closer age = same generation = warmer |
| Career stats | 10% | Similar appearances, goals and assists profile |
Reading the heat colours
| Colour | Rank range | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 Green | #1 – #25 | Very close — same club or tight cluster |
| 🟠 Orange | #26 – #150 | Getting warm — right area |
| 🔴 Red | #151 – #773 | Cold — change your angle |
How to solve Football Contexto faster
- 1. Open with a superstar. A famous, well-travelled player shares clubs and eras with many others, so it usually lands in green or orange and points you to a region of the database.
- 2. Follow the club signal. Shared clubs carry the most weight — when a guess jumps warmer, try teammates from that same club next.
- 3. Read the reason label. “Same nationality · same era” tells you to stay in that country and generation; “no overlap” means change angle entirely.
- 4. Bracket the rank. If one guess is #40 and another #120, players between them in club/era space are your best next picks.
- 5. Spend a hint wisely. A hint surfaces someone closer than your best — use it to break out of a cold streak rather than as a first move.

Frequently asked questions
What is Football Contexto?
Football Contexto is a daily football guessing game inspired by Contexto. A secret footballer is hidden each day; every player you guess is ranked by how close they are to the answer, and you keep guessing — getting warmer — until you reach #1.
How do you play Football Contexto?
Type any footballer’s name. You get back a closeness rank and a heat colour. A lower rank means you are warmer. Use the rank and the “why this rank” label to home in on the secret player. You have unlimited guesses.
How is the closeness rank calculated?
Every guess is compared to the secret player across six weighted signals — shared clubs (35%), era overlap (15%), position (15%), nationality (15%), age (10%) and career-stat profile (10%). All 773 players are sorted by that distance, so the answer is #1 and your guess shows its position in that ranking.
What do the green, orange and red colours mean?
They are heat bands by rank. Green is #1–#25 (very close), orange is #26–#150 (getting warm) and red is #151–#773 (cold).
Is there a guess limit?
No. Football Contexto gives you unlimited guesses — keep going until you reach #1, or use Give Up to reveal the answer.
How many footballers can the answer be?
773. The daily secret player is drawn from our full database of 773 footballers across dozens of nationalities and hundreds of clubs.
Does the answer change every day?
Yes. A seeded generator picks the same secret player for every visitor on a given date, so your result is directly comparable with friends.
Can I play past Football Contexto puzzles?
Yes. Previous days are replayable from the archive as standalone solves that don’t affect your current streak.
Is there an unlimited or practice mode?
Yes. After finishing the daily puzzle you can play unlimited random boards back to back, then return to the daily whenever you like.
How is this different from Contextinho?
Football Contexto shows a transparent “why this rank” label under every guess (shared a club, same nationality and era, and so on), plus a replayable archive and an unlimited mode — so you can actually learn from each guess instead of staring at a bare number.
