Football Pointless Game — Deep Cut · Name the 773-player rarest answers

Today's Deep Cut·June 15, 2026

What is Deep Cut?

Deep Cut is a daily football Pointless game: name the most obscure players who fit the category, not the famous ones. Every valid answer scores a popularity from 0 to 100, and your goal is the lowest total. The obvious superstar costs you the most; the deep cut almost nobody remembers is the winning move — and the single rarest player scores a jackpot 0.

Data footprint

Categories are drawn from 773 players, 200+ clubs and 69 nationalities, and each is tuned to 15–40 valid answers from 22 playable categories. Popularity is computed from real career data — famous-club count, appearances and goals — and ranked within the day's valid set, so it is fully transparent and reproducible.

How to play in 4 steps

  1. 1

    Read the category

A daily category is shown, such as "Played for AC Milan", with 15–40 valid players.

  2. 2

    Name five players

Submit 5 players who fit. Each valid pick scores its popularity from 0 to 100.

  3. 3

    Go obscure

The rarer your valid pick, the lower your score. The rarest player scores 0 and unlocks the Zero Shield (drops your worst pick).

  4. 4

    Beat the table

Your total maps to a league-table tier from Invincible down to Relegation. Lower is better.

Worked example: “Players who played for AC Milan”

Here is why obscurity wins. Each pick shows its popularity (lower is better) and exactly why it scored that way — the transparent score Deep Cut shows that a survey-based game cannot.

PickPopularity (lower = better)Why
Kaká100Ballon d’Or, 400+ apps, multiple megaclubs
Andriy Shevchenko92Iconic scorer, big-club CV
Clarence Seedorf74Long career, Madrid + Inter + Milan
Mathieu Flamini38Recognisable role player
Ignazio Abate12One-club servant, low fame signal
A deep cut0Few big-club seasons → jackpot 💎

Pick the deep cut over Kaká and you score 0 instead of 100. Five deep cuts beat five superstars every time. (Numbers illustrate the model; the live game computes them from the dataset.)

League-table tiers

⭐ Invincible0Five perfect deep cuts
🏆 Champions1–100Mostly obscure picks
🌍 European Qualification101–180A good, brave run
📊 Mid-table181–280A mix of safe and bold

How to score low

  1. 1. Forget the obvious five. The names that jump to mind are exactly the ones that score 90–100. Skip them.
  2. 2. Think squad players and short spells. A reserve keeper or a one-season loanee who genuinely fits the category is gold — low fame, fully valid.
  3. 3. Chase the Zero. Finding the single rarest valid player scores 0 and unlocks the Zero Shield, which wipes your worst pick. It’s worth a gamble.
  4. 4. Never guess wild. An invalid name is +100 — worse than naming Messi. If you’re not sure a player fits, don’t risk it.
  5. 5. Use the reveal to learn. After each round, the full ranked answer list shows the deep cuts you missed — fuel for tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions

What is a football Pointless game?

A football Pointless game flips normal trivia: instead of the obvious answer, you score better for naming the most obscure valid one. In Deep Cut you name players who fit a daily category, and the rarer your valid pick, the lower (better) your score.

How do you play Deep Cut?

A category is shown, such as "Played for AC Milan". You submit 5 players who fit it. Each valid answer scores its popularity from 0 to 100 — pick obscure players to keep your total low.

How is the popularity score calculated?

Each valid player gets a popularity from 0 to 100 equal to their fame percentile within that day’s valid answer set, computed from real career data — famous-club count, total appearances and total goals. The single most obscure valid player scores 0; the most famous scores 100.

Why is a lower score better?

Like the TV show Pointless, the goal is inverted: the obvious, famous pick costs you the most. Naming a deep cut that fits the category but that almost no one would think of is the winning move.

What is a "Zero" answer and the Zero Shield?

The rarest valid player in a category scores 0 — a jackpot. If any of your answers scores 0, you unlock the Zero Shield, which drops your single worst (highest) score from your total.

What happens if I name an invalid player?

An answer that does not fit the category adds a flat +100 to your total — worse than even the most famous valid pick, so it pays to be sure.

How many answers do I submit?

5. Once you lock in your fifth answer the round ends and your total maps to a league-table tier.

How is Deep Cut different from GoalLess?

GoalLess scores answers from an opaque survey of 100 fans. Deep Cut uses a transparent, deterministic popularity score from real career data, and shows you exactly why a player is rare — and it reveals the full answer list for free, with no ad-gate.

Is there an unlimited mode and an archive?

Yes. After the daily category you can play Unlimited with fresh random categories, and a daily archive lets you replay past days without affecting your streak.

Is Deep Cut free? Do I need an account?

Completely free, no signup, no ads in the game flow. Open the page and start naming deep cuts.
