Football Timeline — Daily Career Chronology Game

How Football Timeline works
Football Timeline is a daily career chronology puzzle. The game shows a mystery footballer and a scrambled list of the clubs they played for. Your job is to drag each club into its correct chronological slot — youth or first senior move on the left, most recent on the right. Wrong placements cost an attempt; correct ones lock in and cannot be undone.
The eligible-career pool contains 365 footballers with 3 or more clubs in our 773-player database. Of those, 139 have 4+ clubs and 41 have 5+ clubs — the longer chains produce the richest puzzles. Every daily puzzle is scored on two axes (path complexity + fame) before being assigned a difficulty tier.

How to play in 4 steps
- 1
Read the career card
The mystery player is shown with their nationality and position. Harder puzzles hide the player's name — easier ones reveal it.
- 2
Drag clubs into slots
Drag each crest into its chronological slot — earliest senior transfer on the left, most recent on the right. Drop zones accept and slot instantly.
- 3
Correct slots lock in
Slots that match the real timeline lock in place immediately. Wrong slots flag red and can be redragged.
- 4
Finish before attempts run out
Each wrong placement spends an attempt. Running out reveals the full timeline and resets your streak.
Difficulty: how today's puzzle got its tier
Every eligible career gets two scores — path complexity (clubs, loans, overlapping years) and visibility (how likely a casual fan is to recognise the clubs on sight). The generator combines them into a tier.
| Tier | What that looks like in a puzzle |
|---|---|
| Easy | Famous player with an obvious career arc. Elite clubs you recognise on sight, few overlapping years. |
| Medium | Solid mid-career player or a legend with a trickier path — short loans, a return to a former club, or years you have to guess between. |
| Hard | Journeyman or less-famous career where the chronological hints are thin. Two obscure moves in the same year pushes this into hard territory. |
Who shows up in Timeline?
Only footballers with a rich enough career. Our database has three tiers of eligibility by club count:
| Career length | Players in pool |
|---|---|
| 3 or more clubs | 365 |
| 4 or more clubs | 139 |
| 5 or more clubs | 41 |

How to order a career timeline
- 1. Anchor the extremes. Place the debut club and the latest club first — they are the easiest and they bound everything else.
- 2. Work inward. Slot the obvious early and late moves next, leaving only the murky middle to reason about.
- 3. Use signature spells. A long stay at one club is a fixed point — everything before it is earlier, everything after is later.
- 4. Date the big transfers. Marquee moves you remember give you hard reference points to order around.
- 5. Re-check the middle. Two mid-career clubs of similar era are where most mistakes hide — verify them last.
A worked example
Given five club crests, place the youth/debut side at the start and the current club at the end — that's two of five locked instantly. A long, famous spell in the middle becomes your third anchor: everything before it slots earlier, everything after it slots later. Only then do you settle the two remaining mid-career clubs, which is where careful recall pays off.

Frequently asked questions
What is the goal of Football Timeline?
Arrange the shown clubs in chronological order — earliest senior transfer first, most recent last. The player’s name is hidden in harder puzzles; in easier ones the name is visible so you focus purely on ordering.
How is the daily puzzle’s difficulty chosen?
The generator scores each eligible player on two axes: path complexity (how many clubs, how many loan moves, how compressed the career was in time) and fame (how likely the average fan is to recognise the clubs on sight). Easy puzzles have famous clubs with a clean linear arc; hard puzzles are journeyman careers with multiple moves in overlapping years.
Which players can be the mystery footballer?
Any player with at least 3 distinct clubs in our 773-player database — 365 players qualify as of April 2026. Of those, 139 have 4+ clubs and 41 have 5+ clubs; the longer chains produce the richest puzzles.
Do loan spells count as separate clubs in the chain?
Yes. Any official loan where the player made competitive appearances is its own stop in the timeline. Pre-season tours and trial weeks do not count.
What happens if I drop a club in the wrong slot?
The slot flags as incorrect and your attempt counter ticks down. Drag the club to another slot to retry. Each puzzle has a fixed attempt budget before the full solution is revealed.
Can I play past Timeline puzzles?
Yes. The archive lists every past day; each archive play is standalone and does not affect your current streak.
Is the same puzzle shown to everyone daily?
Yes. A seeded generator ensures every player worldwide sees the same mystery footballer and the same club lineup on a given date — results are directly comparable.
What if two clubs had overlapping years in the player’s career?
Order by transfer date (when the player joined). If a simultaneous loan overlaps with the parent club, the parent club goes where the player was signed; the loan slots by its own start date.
What is the best strategy for Football Timeline?
Anchor the extremes first — the player’s debut club and their latest club are the easiest to place. Then work inward, slotting the obvious early and late moves before you wrestle with the middle of the career, where most ordering errors hide.
How do I handle a long spell at one club?
A long stay is a fixed point — once it is placed, everything before it came earlier and everything after came later, which collapses the rest of the ordering.
How is it different from Career Path?
Career Path asks you to name the player from their clubs; Football Timeline shows you the clubs and asks you to put them in chronological order. One is identification, the other is sequencing.
Can I play Football Timeline on mobile?
Yes. It is a responsive web game with drag-and-drop sized for touch — no download — and works on phones, tablets and desktops.
Is Football Timeline free?
Yes. No signup, no paywall, no ads inside the game flow.
