About the game

What is Kick?

Kick is a free precision football game set on a city street, in which you move left and right with the arrow keys to keep the ball out of the windows lining the road — every window you hit lowers your score, and the aim is to keep that score above zero for as long as possible.

GamePix published it on June 13, 2022 and updated it in February 2023. It is a Unity WebGL game, so a loading counter appears first, and it plays in landscape in desktop and mobile browsers. GamePix’s description sums it up as guiding a ball through tricky environments, bouncing it off surfaces and dodging obstacles while you avoid smashing windows.

The title screen sets the tone: a red-brick wall with “KICK” painted across it, a big glass window, terracotta roof tiles, a fire hydrant and a menu of Play, Score and Gifts. A Tilt Controls switch sits in the corner, for steering by tilting a phone instead of pressing keys.

In play, the camera looks straight down on a street. The road runs up the middle with its lane markings, pavements line both sides with fire hydrants and drain grates, and windows are set into the walls on either edge. You are at the bottom of the screen with the ball, and short tips with a lightbulb icon explain the rules as you start: use the left and right arrow keys to move; the objective is to keep the score above zero as long as possible; kicking the ball into windows reduces your score. A Skip button dismisses them.

Two numbers sit on the right. A green counter climbs steadily while you play, and a white score drops every time you pay for a mistake — in our test it went from 17 to 12 to 5 in a few seconds of careless play. That falling score is the whole tension of Kick: you are not chasing goals, you are protecting a number.

GamePix also notes that the difficulty escalates, with new obstacles appearing as you progress, so balancing speed and precision is what keeps a run alive. It is a different kind of football skill from the rest of our arcade — ball control in a tight space rather than shooting.

Kick pairs well with Goal Quest, our physics puzzle where you guide a ball to the goal by removing blocks, and Hit the Crossbar, where the target is the bar rather than the net. Of the three, Kick is the one that tests steady control over time rather than a single shot or solution.

How to play

Playing Kick

  1. 1
    Wait for it to load

Kick is a Unity game, so a percentage counter appears while it downloads. The title screen with Play, Score and Gifts follows.

  2. 2
    Choose your controls

On a phone, the Tilt Controls switch on the title screen lets you steer by tilting the device. On a computer, the arrow keys are all you need.

  3. 3
    Start a run

Start a run from the menu. In our testing the Play button on the Score screen started the game reliably.

  4. 4
    Read the tips

Short tips explain the rules as the run begins: move with the left and right arrow keys, keep the score above zero, and avoid kicking the ball into windows. Press Skip to dismiss them.

  5. 5
    Steer down the street

Move left and right to keep the ball in the road and away from the windows set into the walls on both sides. Fire hydrants, grates and other obstacles line the pavements. Your player stays at the bottom of the screen while the street scrolls, so all your attention can go on the ball.

  6. 6
    Protect your score

Each window you hit lowers the white score on the right. Keep it above zero for as long as you can while the green counter climbs.

Tips & strategy

How to win at Kick

  • Stay central. The windows are on the edges of the street, so the middle of the road is the safest place to keep the ball. Drift to the sides only when you have to. Return to the centre as soon as the obstacle has passed.

  • Make small corrections. Long presses on the arrow keys swing you too far and put the ball into a wall. Short taps keep it on a tight line down the road. Precision beats reaction speed here.

  • Think of the score as health. You are not trying to rack up points; you are trying not to lose them. Every window is damage, so a careful run beats a fast, reckless one. The longest runs come from the fewest mistakes, not the boldest moves.

  • Watch the bounce. GamePix describes bouncing the ball off surfaces. A ball heading for a wall will come back at an angle, so position yourself for the rebound rather than chasing it into the window.

  • Expect new obstacles. The difficulty escalates as you play, with new obstacles appearing. Stay alert after the opening seconds rather than settling into autopilot.

  • Try tilt on a phone. If tapping keys is not an option, switch on Tilt Controls from the title screen. Gentle tilts work better than big movements.

  • Balance speed and precision. GamePix frames the challenge as balancing speed and precision. When the street gets busy, slow your movements down and prioritise keeping the ball clean over reacting quickly.

Good to know — Kick is the only game in our arcade where the score goes down: it starts high and falls with every window you smash, and the goal is to keep it above zero. Survival, not scoring, is the measure of a good run.

It is a Unity WebGL game, so it downloads its assets first and shows a percentage counter while it does. After that it runs smoothly.

Yes, but not a shooting one. You guide a football down a street, and the skill is close ball control in a tight space — keeping it out of the windows — rather than scoring goals past a keeper.
